What a 99.8% answer rate is worth

What a 99.8% answer rate is worth

For most businesses, a missed call feels like a minor inconvenience. Our data says otherwise.

The methodology

We analyzed 12 months of call data from over 4,000 TalkPixie customers across real estate, home services, healthcare, and professional services. We compared revenue per lead for customers with answer rates above 99% versus those below 90%. Then we adjusted for deal size, lead source, and industry to isolate the answer rate variable.

What we found

The revenue difference was larger than we expected.

Across all industries, customers who answered 99%+ of calls converted leads at a rate 2.3x higher than those who answered fewer than 90%. In real estate specifically, that gap widened to 3.1x.

When we translated that into dollars: a typical real estate agency missing 15 calls per week was leaving an estimated $340,000 in annual revenue on the table. For home services businesses, the average was $86,000.

Why missed calls cost so much more than they appear to

The surface-level cost is the lead value of that specific call. The real cost is deeper.

Compound abandonment. A prospect who calls and gets no answer often doesn't call back. They call a competitor. That competitor answers. The prospect now has a relationship with someone else, and they're less likely to even try you again even if they later see your ad.

Review asymmetry. Customers who get a great experience leave reviews 30% of the time. Customers who can't reach you leave a negative review 12% of the time. But the math is worse than it looks: each 1-star review costs roughly 30 new customers who see it and choose a competitor.

Referral loss. When a lead converts, they refer on average 1.4 other people over the next 18 months. When they don't convert because you didn't answer, you lose those downstream leads too.

The realistic path to 99.8%

A 99.8% answer rate means missing fewer than 2 calls out of every 1,000. For most businesses, that's not achievable with human staff alone.

The customers in our 99%+ cohort all share one characteristic: they have a first-line system (AI, IVR, or dedicated answering service) that catches every call regardless of time, staffing, or volume. The AI handles qualification and scheduling; humans handle complex conversations and closes.

The bottom line

Every time your phone rings and nobody answers, you're not missing one lead. You're missing that lead's lifetime value, their referrals, and the review they might have left. That math compounds fast.

The businesses in our data that cracked 99.8% didn't get there by hiring more people. They got there by removing the dependency on human availability for first contact.
